Warning as Pensioners Targeted in Ruthless Phone Scam in Southampton
Southampton pensioners have fallen prey to a nasty phone scam claiming owed money to HMRC. Police are on alert and urging locals to stay sharp after two elderly residents received threatening calls demanding cash.
Elderly Victims Targeted with Bogus Tax Demands
On the morning of Thursday, June 2nd, a 73-year-old man got a chilling call. The scammer pretended to be from HM Revenue and Customs, claiming he owed £5,000 and must pay immediately or face arrest. The caller sounded convincing, even knowing some personal details, but the man soon grew suspicious and hung up.
The very next day, an elderly woman in Lordshill got a similar call. Unlike the man, she reported it straight to the police. Officers quickly advised her not to hand over any money.
Police Issue Tough Warning to Keep Southampton Safe
“We are issuing this warning in case further Southampton residents receive calls of this nature,” said Police Community Support Officer David Warburton.
“These scams often target vulnerable and confused older people. Requests like this are never genuine. If you get a similar call, do not share any personal details.
“Make sure your elderly family, friends, or neighbours know about this scam and remind them to stay vigilant.”
Top Tips to Avoid Falling for Phone Scams
