Tragic death of nursing grad Rebecca Ikumelo in Brixton crowd crush

Rebecca Ikumelo was a beloved nursing graduate and devoted mother of two, described by her family as tender, kind, and full of love. Her parents gave her the name Tosin, meaning “Lord is Worthy.” She was passionate about working with children and was cherished by all who knew her.
Deadly crush at Asake’s Brixton gig
On Thursday, December 15, chaos erupted outside the O2 Academy in Brixton as a huge crowd tried to force entry without tickets to Nigerian star Asake’s show on Stockwell Road. Rebecca was one of three people seriously injured in the crush. Sadly, she passed away after being critically hurt. Two other women, aged 21 and 23, remain in critical condition.
Police investigation and community calls
The Metropolitan Police responded swiftly, arriving within minutes of reports at 9.04pm. During the chaos, one woman was arrested after allegedly attacking an officer. Specialist officers continue to support Rebecca’s family while a post-mortem is scheduled at Greenwich Public Mortuary.

Asake and London’s Mayor respond to tragedy
Asake expressed his heartbreak on Instagram: “I am devastated by the news that Rebecca Ikumelo has sadly passed away. My sincerest condolences to her loved ones. I am overcome with grief and could never have imagined this.”
“My team and I await a full report from venue management and the police to understand what happened.” He urged witnesses to come forward.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan added, “I am heartbroken by Rebecca’s tragic death. City Hall is working closely with venues and authorities to ensure nothing like this happens again. Rebecca had her entire life ahead of her — my deepest condolences go to her family and friends.”
