UK on High Alert as Lockdown Eases – Terror Threat Still Looms
Police Warn Businesses: Stay Vigilant This Summer
As the UK scrapes out of lockdown, police are sounding the alarm. The Covid-19 threat may be top of mind, but terror risks remain real and present. With streets, shops, and stadiums reopening, terrorists could see new chances to strike. Police are urging businesses and the public to stay sharp and report anything fishy immediately.
Terror Threat Level Remains ‘Substantial’
The official terrorism threat sits at SUBSTANTIAL — meaning an attack is likely. Counter Terrorism Policing has launched a fresh campaign to rally the nation’s eyes and ears. Chief Superintendent Jerry Westerman stressed the need for united vigilance:
“There is no current specific threat to Surrey or Sussex but as lockdown lifts and people return to normal, the risk grows again. Terrorism was low during lockdown since it was hard to operate in public. But now crowded places fill up, that risk comes back strong.”
“The best defence is a joint effort — police, security staff, businesses, and the public working together to minimise any chance of attack.”
Businesses Must Step Up Security Game
Police want businesses to review and tighten their security plans, especially for new outdoor spaces set up to comply with Covid rules. Risk assessments must be updated. Meanwhile, the public can get clued-up for free with the Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) online training. It takes just 45 minutes and teaches how to spot suspicious behaviour and respond safely during an attack.
“This training could save your life, or the lives of others,” said Westerman.
Know What to Do – Report Anything Suspicious
Police work tirelessly to stop terrorists, but they need your help. If you spot something odd – a suspicious bag, person or vehicle – don’t hesitate.
- If it’s urgent, move away and call 999 immediately.
- For non-urgent concerns, use the 1 or call the Anti-Terrorism Hotline on 0800 789 321.
Stay alert this summer and help keep the UK safe from terror threats as we reopen.
