Frantic Search Continues for Boy Who Fell Into River Stour
Kent Police and emergency teams are still hunting for six-year-old Lucas Dobson, who plunged into the River Stour in Sandwich while fishing. The alarm was raised on Saturday 17 August at 1.20pm when Lucas slipped into the water on Richborough Road.
Hundreds Join Massive River Search
For three days, a huge effort involving police, fire crews, Coastguard, search and rescue teams, and hundreds of volunteers has scoured the river and surrounding areas. Despite the large turnout, as of Tuesday 20 August, officers urge the public to stay clear to allow experts to work safely and efficiently.
Chief Inspector Praises Community, Warns of River Dangers
“An incredible wave of community support has allowed us to search wide areas quickly. We’ve ruled out several zones, so now our focus is solely on the river where Lucas was last seen,” said Chief Inspector Mark Weller.
“Volunteers’ kindness and effort have been heart-warming, but the river is dangerous. For everyone’s safety—including emergency workers—we ask that people stop physically helping with the search and leave it to the experts.”
High-Tech Hunt Underway
Rescue teams are deploying sonar detectors, underwater cameras, divers, search dogs, and drones in a bid to find Lucas. Kent Fire and Rescue, HM Coastguard, and Kent Search and Rescue continue their intensive operation.
“We thank all those involved and our thoughts remain with Lucas’ family during this desperate time,” added Chief Inspector Weller.
