Hero Cop DS Nick Bailey Retires After Nerve Agent Nightmare

Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, the brave officer exposed to the deadly Novichok nerve agent during the 2018 Salisbury poisoning, has retired. His retirement marks the end of a harrowing chapter for both him and his family.

Chief Constable Pays Tribute

Chief Constable Kier Pritchard saluted Nick’s dedication, saying, “I have known and respected Nick for many years as a dedicated colleague and detective.” Nick was one of the first officers on the scene in Salisbury, where his life was turned upside down by the terrifying nerve agent attack.

“It is impossible for any of us to fully understand the impact this event has had on Nick and his family,” Pritchard added. He praised Nick’s relentless commitment, noting his several attempts to return to full duty. “Nick represents the dedication and determination we want to see in police officers nationwide.”

The Chief Constable assured that Nick will always be part of the Wiltshire Police family and wished him and his family “the greatest success for their future.”

Crime Commissioner Offers Support and Respect

Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson also paid tribute to Nick’s service. “Nick found himself at the centre of an international criminal incident which not only affected his health but changed his family’s lives,” he said.

Macpherson called the Salisbury and Amesbury incidents “unprecedented,” stressing that no other UK officer has faced what Nick endured. He praised the police force’s welfare efforts and hoped Nick’s retirement brings “some sense of closure” for the family.

“Nick symbolises the dedication and public duty our officers, staff, and volunteers show every day. I wish Nick and his family the very best in the future,” added the commissioner.

A New Chapter Beckons

After surviving one of the most chilling attacks on UK soil, Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey steps away from frontline duty. But as Chief Constable Pritchard noted, “As one chapter closes, another opportunity will open up for Nick.”
