Two Officers Nominated for National Police Bravery Awards 2024 After Motorway Rescue

Two officers from Avon and Somerset Police have been nominated for the prestigious National Police Bravery Awards 2024 for their heroic actions in rescuing a distressed man on a busy motorway.

On the evening of Sunday, May 28, 2023, Police Sergeant (PS) Nick Dalrymple and Police Constable (PC) Mitchell Raymond responded to a concern for welfare incident on the M5 southbound carriageway on the Avonmouth Bridge. PS Dalrymple, a dog handler based at the force’s Wilfred Fuller Operational Centre, was first on the scene.

Upon arriving at the bridge, PS Dalrymple encountered a distressing scene – a man standing dangerously between lanes one and two, seemingly intent on walking into oncoming traffic. Despite the risk to himself, PS Dalrymple immediately activated his emergency lighting and sirens to slow down traffic. However, the situation remained perilous.

Without hesitation, PS Dalrymple exited his vehicle and attempted to engage with the distressed individual, who was showing signs of intending self-harm. Meanwhile, off-duty PC Mitchell Raymond, who happened to be passing by, quickly responded to the unfolding crisis.

PC Raymond, recognizing the urgent need for intervention, deployed his protective equipment and utilized PAVA spray to safely detain the distressed man. Their swift and decisive actions ensured the safety of the individual in distress and prevented a potential tragedy on the motorway.

For their remarkable bravery and commitment to public safety, both officers were awarded a Chief Constable’s Commendation on November 29, 2023. Their nomination for the National Police Bravery Awards is a testament to their courage and dedication to duty.

Avon and Somerset Police Federation Vice Chair Iain Prideaux commended the officers, stating, “Their actions on a busy motorway and facing into oncoming vehicles, rescued a man from serious harm or death, and protected other members of the public who were using the motorway at that time.

Avon and Somerset Police Chief Constable Sarah Crew praised PS Dalrymple and PC Raymond, emphasizing their bravery and selflessness in the face of imminent danger. She stated, “They embody our values of caring and courage and are a credit to policing.”

PS Nick Dalrymple and PC Mitchell Raymond’s nomination for the Police Bravery Awards 2024 serves as a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by police officers to protect and serve their communities.
