Flood Alert Hits Cuckmere River Area
The Environment Agency has issued a Flood Alert for the Cuckmere River and its tributaries, spanning from Vines Cross to Exceat Bridge. Heavy rain this weekend could cause flooding from Sunday through Monday. Residents must prepare now.
Heavy Rain to Trigger Flood Risk
Forecasters warn persistent, sometimes heavy rain could dump 30-60mm — nearly half a month’s worth — over the region. Minor floods are expected, but if rainfall peaks, homes could face flooding.
Flooding could hit fields, rural roads, and gardens from 10pm on 18th December. Areas at risk include Mill Lane, Hellingly; Grove Hill near Grovebridge Farm; and Hammer Lane near Cowbeech.
Flood Risk to Properties and Roads
By 4am on 19th December, flooding may affect properties on Station Road, Church Lane, and Church Road. Later in the afternoon, North Street, Willows Car Park, River Lane, The Old Clergy House, and Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston could see impacts.
Additional rain on Monday could push the Cuckmere and Bull Rivers even higher, with water levels likely to stay above normal throughout the week. Drivers should avoid flood-prone routes such as Mill Lane and Church Road in Hellingly, and North Street in Alfriston.
Stay Updated and Stay Safe
The Environment Agency will monitor river levels closely and update flood warnings by 11am on 19th December.
