A34 Shut for Hours After Serious Crash Near Oxford

The A34 in Oxfordshire is set to remain closed both ways for hours following a major collision between the M40 and Peartree Interchange. Police confirmed the road will stay shut well into the early hours of Friday as emergency crews deal with the aftermath.

Drivers Escape with Minor Injuries

Thankfully, those involved walked away with only minor injuries. But the closure affects the stretch between M40 Junction 9 and the A44 Peartree Interchange, causing major disruption near Oxford.

Police and Highways England Manage Incident

Thames Valley Police, alongside Highways England and other emergency services, are working hard to clear the scene. The closure is expected to last for several hours, so expect delays if you’re heading through the area.

Alternative Routes and Diversions in Place

  • Southbound: Due to ongoing roadworks, the A34 southbound is effectively closed from M40 J9 to A423 Kennington. Drivers heading south should consider the longer but faster route: M40 southbound to J4, then A404/A404(M) to M4 J8/9, and finally M4 west to J13 (Chieveley).
  • Northbound: A local diversion is in place via Oxford. Take the A34 northbound exit at Hinksey Hill Interchange, follow the black diamond signs to A423 (Oxford Southern Bypass), then join A4142 (Eastern Bypass Road), continue to the A40 at Headington, and merge onto the A40 south to reconnect with M40 at Oxford Services Interchange (J8A) before rejoining M40 northbound.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead, use alternative routes, and expect significant delays. Traffic is starting to ease, so if you’re stuck in the queue, relief should be on its way soon.
