Free Flu Jabs for Secondary School Kids Announced by UK Government
From September 2023, over three million secondary school pupils in England will get a free flu vaccine. The UK government is rolling out nasal spray jabs to students in years 7 to 11, aiming to slash flu cases and protect the wider community.
New Flu Jab Offer Targets Teens
The new plan extends last May’s flu vaccine eligibility by including all secondary school kids. Starting from the 2023/24 season, NHS will deliver nasal spray vaccines through school programs.
This move not only shields youngsters from flu but also cuts transmission to vulnerable groups like the elderly, easing pressure on the NHS.
Officials Push Flu Vaccine Boost
“Millions of young people will get extra protection against flu this winter,” said Health Minister Maria Caulfield. “It will reduce hospital admissions, free up NHS beds, and protect loved ones.”
NHS Director of Vaccinations Steve Russell urged parents and teens to take up the jab at school. “It’s quick, easy, and protects you and your family. Don’t delay when offered,” he said.
Backing from Experts
The JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation) supports the expanded program. Dr Mary Ramsay of the UK Health Security Agency highlighted the need to protect teenagers after last year’s hospital spikes.
“Expanding the program will reduce flu spread, protect friends and family, and ease NHS burden,” she said.
Also Covering Primary Schools and Toddlers
Alongside secondary pupils, primary school children and toddlers aged 2 and 3 remain eligible for flu vaccines this season.
The government urges eligible families to get vaccinated before flu season kicks off, cutting illness and keeping schools open during winter.
