Birmingham Airport Unveils £60 Million High-Tech Security Upgrade
Birmingham Airport is ahead of the game, rolling out a cutting-edge security screening area months before new government rules kick in on June 1, 2024. This major upgrade is designed to speed up passenger flows while tightening security at one of the UK’s busiest airports.
Massive Expansion and Smart Tech Installation
Rather than just swapping out old scanners, Birmingham Airport invested £60 million to build a bigger, smarter security hall. The project kicked off in January 2022 and took 18 months of planning, procurement, and construction to complete. The result? A state-of-the-art facility built to handle the airport’s future passenger boom while meeting tighter regulations on screening liquids and electrical devices.
Streamlined Screening, Less Fuss for Passengers
The revamped security zone delivers a hassle-free experience. Travelers no longer need to remove liquids of up to 100ml or take out electrical gadgets from their hand luggage. This smoother process cuts queues and stress, making travel through Birmingham far more pleasant.
Waiting on Final Green Light for Bigger Liquid Allowance
Despite the advanced setup, passengers must currently stick to carrying liquids of 100ml or less. The airport is waiting on final regulatory approval to allow up to 2 litres, which will further ease rules on liquid carriage.
“We’ve invested £60 million to be ready for the new rules on June 1, 2024,” said Al Titterington, Terminal Operations Director. “Until we get the final go-ahead for the 2-litre liquid allowance, passengers can carry liquids, pastes, and gels up to 100ml loose in their hand luggage. Electrical items can stay in bags during screening, making for a much quicker process.”
Birmingham Airport’s bold upgrade shows it’s serious about keeping travellers safe while delivering a smooth journey as passenger numbers soar back post-pandemic.
