Driver Escapes Serious Injury After Car Smashes Into Pelican Crossing in Newport

A driver narrowly avoided serious injury after crashing his car into a Pelican crossing in Newport’s town centre on the Isle of Wight.

Crash on Busy Newport Junction

The smash happened shortly after 11am on Saturday at the busy junction of Medina Avenue and St John Place. A red Vauxhall Zafira ploughed into the crossing, sending shockwaves through startled onlookers.

Driver’s Foot Trapped Causes Hazard

Sources say the driver’s foot got stuck between the pedals, forcing him to swerve onto the wrong side of the road. This was to avoid rear-ending cars that had stopped to let pedestrians cross. Thankfully, nobody on the crossing was hurt.

Vehicle Recovered and Crossing Being Repaired

The driver has been spoken to by authorities, and the damaged car was collected by Stag Lane Motors. Meanwhile, Island Roads crews are making the damaged crossing safe for the public once again.
