Missing Swimmer Sparks Huge Coastguard Search on Aldwick Beach
A major emergency search kicked off on Sunday, September 29, after abandoned clothes were spotted on Aldwick Beach, sparking fears a swimmer had gone missing.
All Hands on Deck for Urgent Rescue Mission
The UK Coastguard quickly rallied multiple teams, including Sussex Police and local lifeboat crews, to scour sea and shore. The Selsey RNLI all-weather lifeboat (ALB) launched at 2:44pm, with backup from lifeboats at Littlehampton, Hayling, and the Coastguard helicopter Rescue 175.
Systematic Sea and Shore Search in Choppy Conditions
The Selsey lifeboat carried out a creeping line ahead pattern, meticulously combing the waters for any sign of the missing woman believed to have entered the sea. Littlehampton lifeboat searched the coastline while six brave Selsey RNLI crew combed the sands from the Coastguard station right through to Pagham Harbour.
Despite southerly winds force 6 to 7 and moderate seas, the good visibility was a blessing, enabling an intense search operation.
Search Called Off After Hours – Missing Woman Found Safe
At 4:07pm, the Bembridge lifeboat joined the hunt, covering an area southwest of Selsey Bill. After hours of efforts by air, sea, and land teams, the search was stood down at 5:16pm.
UK Coastguards confirmed the missing woman was found safe and well, inland and away from the water.
