Concrete Crushers to Tear Down Footbridge on Busy M27 Motorway
A major overnight closure on the M27 is set to slam traffic next month as giant machines munch away a footbridge between Junctions 9 and 11.
M27 Shutdown: When and Where
The M27 will be completely shut from 9pm Friday, 14 June to 9pm Saturday, 15 June 2019. The closure, stretching between Junctions 9 and 11, is needed for the demolition of North Fareham Footbridge, part of the smart motorway upgrade between Junctions 4 and 11.
Concrete Crunchers On The Job
Highways England contractors will deploy gruesome machines nicknamed ‘concrete munchers’ directly on the motorway to demolish the footbridge overnight. Once the bridge is crushed and debris cleared, the motorway will reopen.
Warning: The demolition will be noisy and could disrupt nearby residents.
Prepare: Major Diversions in Place
The closure means drivers must follow lengthy diversions along the A27.
- Westbound (Junction 11 to 9): Exit at J11, follow signs onto A27 towards Gosport, continue via Titchfield and multiple roundabouts before rejoining M27 at J9.
- Eastbound (Junction 9 to 11): Exit at J9 onto A27 towards Segensworth, follow roundabouts through to rejoin M27 at J11.
- Eastbound (Junction 10 to 11): Divert via A32 through Fareham and Portchester, then rejoin M27 at J11.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and stay alert to the clearly marked diversion signs during the demolition weekend.
