DVLA Slams Untaxed Drivers: Tax Your Off-Road Cars Before Hitting the Road!

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has fired a sharp warning at motorists using vehicles declared off the road with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). If you want to drive again, your vehicle must be taxed first — no excuses.

What is a SORN? Don’t Make This Costly Mistake!

A SORN is a legal declaration to the DVLA confirming your vehicle is off public roads and not in use. This means no road tax is needed while the vehicle stays off the road uninsured. But here’s the catch: if you take it out again, you must tax it before driving.

Fines Hit Hard – Up to £1,000 or More!

The DVLA’s no-nonsense reminder on social media spelled out the risks: “Has your vehicle been declared off-road (SORN) for a while? Don’t forget, if you want to use it on the road again, tax it before you do.”

Ignore this and you could face fines hitting up to £1,000 or five times the tax owed — whichever is higher. Untaxed cars risk being clamped, with added release fees.

SORN Numbers Soar as Drivers Scramble to Save Cash

New figures reveal a near 5% spike in SORN declarations in 2023 versus 2022. Experts reckon drivers are opting off-road status to dodge hefty insurance premiums and other running costs.

Tim Alcock said, “Times are tough at the moment and a lot of people are making some difficult decisions when it comes to how to save money.” He warned that without a proper SORN, the DVLA considers a vehicle untaxed and ready to fine.

Big Savings on High-Tax Vehicles – But Beware the Pitfalls

Owners of gas-guzzlers face eye-watering tax bills. For example, cars emitting more than 255g CO2/km registered after April 2017 can attract annual tax as high as £2,745. Declaring them off-road could save drivers nearly £3,000 a year — but only if all the rules are followed.

With environmental taxes and regulations tightening, the DVLA urges UK motorists to keep up to date and avoid costly penalties. Tax your vehicle before you hit the road, or risk a big fine!
