Chaos at Kennington Tube as fire breaks out on Northern Line tracks

Smoke and flames halt Kennington Station

Emergency services sprang into action this morning after a fire erupted on Platform 1 tracks at Kennington Underground Station. The blaze led to immediate evacuation, forcing the station’s temporary closure and wreaking havoc on Northern Line services.

Swift response from fire crews and police

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) rushed several fire engines to the scene following reports of thick smoke billowing from the tracks. British Transport Police and TfL staff joined the effort to secure the area and assist stranded commuters.

“It was really scary — the smoke was building up quickly, and station staff moved us out fast,” said one shocked passenger caught up in the chaos.

No injuries but severe disruption

The fire, believed to have started directly on the tracks, caused no reported injuries. However, it sparked major delays and partial suspensions on the Northern Line throughout the morning rush.

TfL urged commuters to seek alternative routes and warned of continued delays until the station reopens.

Investigation underway with no foul play suspected

British Transport Police confirmed they are probing the cause of the fire but currently believe no criminal activity was involved. A spokesperson said:

“We are working with our partners to establish the cause of the fire and ensure the safety of the network.”

Kennington Station remains closed as safety inspections continue. TfL thanked passengers for their patience and advised checking live updates before travelling.
