Massive Blaze Devours Forest Hill Sports Shop

A huge fire tore through Finches sports shop on Perry Vale, Forest Hill, last night, sparking chaos and panic. The inferno broke out just after 6.30pm on Thursday (October 16), gutting the shop floor, basement, storage areas, and the flats above.

Heroic members of the public rescued two residents and a dog trapped in the burning flats before fire crews arrived on the scene.

Man Injured but Stable as Evacuations Continue

London Fire Brigade confirmed a man suffered injuries but did not require hospital treatment. Around 15 residents from neighbouring buildings were evacuated to a rest centre. Most have since returned home, though a handful remain under local authority care.

Thick smoke forced the temporary shutdown of Forest Hill Station, causing further disruption in the area.

Firefighters Battle Fierce Flames Throughout the Night

Fire crews battled the blaze deep into the night, deploying two 32-metre turntable ladders and aerial drones to douse the flames. The fire was finally brought under control by 11.44pm.

Officials believe it started accidentally in a rear workshop during hot work.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jamie Jenkins: “Firefighters faced a fully-developed fire and worked hard to stop it spreading. We advised locals to keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke, which also forced the temporary closure of Forest Hill Station.”

Station Commander Mike Watts: “A 25-metre cordon remains. Perry Vale is still closed to traffic. We’re supporting those affected and maintaining a visible presence while sharing fire safety advice with residents and businesses.”

Ongoing Investigation and Road Closures

A small team remains at the scene, dousing hotspots and leading an investigation into the cause. Perry Vale remains closed to traffic as emergency crews continue their work.
