Gatwick Named UK’s Worst Airport for Flight Delays—Again!

Gatwick Airport has slammed the headlines once more as the UK’s laggard for flight delays. New stats from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) reveal an average delay of 23 minutes for departures in 2024. Though that’s a slight drop from last year’s 27-minute wait, it still leaves travellers fuming ahead of the busy summer travel rush.

Pressure Mounts as Summer Travel Season Looms

Britain’s second busiest airport is battling a cocktail of problems. Staff shortages in air traffic control across Europe and internal control tower disruptions have wreaked havoc. The pain was made worse by over 100 workers from the Unite union employed by ground handling firm Red Handling staging pay and pension strikes over Easter weekend, adding fuel to the fire.

Delays aren’t just Gatwick’s headache. Birmingham Airport clocked the second longest delays at just over 21 minutes, with Manchester airport trailing on 20 minutes. Stansted and Teesside rounded out the Top 5 worst offenders.

On average, UK airports suffered delays of 18 minutes 24 seconds in 2024—a slight improvement from 20 minutes 42 seconds in 2023, but hardly cause for celebration.

Travel Bosses Blast Poor Service

Julia Lo Bue-Said, CEO of the Advantage Travel Partnership, did not hold back:

“Passengers expect and deserve not to spend hours stuck in terminals with little information or support. Reliable service, clear communication and efficient operations should be the standard, not the exception.”

She also highlighted the emotional blow to holidaymakers, many of whom save the entire year for their trips. “Disruption can make people feel like their time and investment aren’t being respected,” she warned.

With a hectic summer looming, Lo Bue-Said urged airports and airlines to act fast to rebuild trust and stop further damage to their reputations.

Gatwick Strikes Back

A Gatwick spokesperson admitted the challenges but insisted they’re fighting back:

“Air traffic control restrictions in other parts of Europe have continued to impact the airport. Together with our airlines, we’ve put in place a robust plan to improve on-time performance further in 2025.”

As delays drag on, calls grow louder for Gatwick to get serious about infrastructure upgrades and smarter planning. The airport’s future performance could make or break Britain’s summer getaway plans.
