Shock Horror! ‘Energy-Saving’ Devices Explode, Risk Fire and Electric Shock
Video footage has emerged showing so-called energy-saving plug-in devices exploding and showering glowing metal fragments, putting users at serious risk of fire and electric shock. Many of these gadgets were being sold on eBay, Electrical Safety First revealed.
Deadly Devices Pulled from eBay After Safety Scare
eBay acted fast, saying it takes product safety “extremely seriously” and immediately removed the dangerous devices from sale. The watchdog stepped in after ads claimed these gadgets could slash energy bills—a claim now exposed as not only false but perilous.
Charity Testing Finds Safety Failures on All Devices
- Electrical Safety First bought four devices—one direct from GetMotex.com, three from eBay.
- All failed basic safety tests, risking fires and electric shocks.
- Testing showed plug pins were the wrong size, endangering wall sockets.
- One device’s key capacitor component was completely disconnected inside, making it useless.
The charity said these dodgy devices do nothing to stabilise electrical current or save energy. Instead, they’re ticking time bombs.
Warning from Electrical Safety First Boss
“Claims surrounding energy savings will undoubtedly be more attractive to people during this time yet the devices we have tested could cost you your safety,” said Lesley Rudd, Chief Executive of Electrical Safety First. “Given the current climate and hardship people are facing, the safety failures present in each of these devices are even more contemptible. We urge everyone to buy from a reputable retailer that you know and trust to protect yourself from dangerous goods.”
The charity has reported the dodgy energy-saving claims to the Advertising Standards Authority and the Office for Product Safety and Standards.
eBay Vows to Keep Dangerous Goods Off Its Site
An eBay spokesman confirmed: “We take product safety extremely seriously, and welcome the information provided to us by Electrical Safety First about these products. Our close working relationship with Westminster Trading Standards enabled the swift removal of these products through our Regulatory Portal.”
However, Electrical Safety First added that the device bought directly from GetMotex.com remains on sale, with no confirmation of any action taken.
Beware, consumers! These “energy-saving” gadgets are not only useless but could ignite serious hazards. Stick to trusted suppliers and avoid risking your home and health.
