Deadly Police Chase Ends in Tragedy

An independent probe is underway after a deadly crash in Croydon following a police pursuit on the evening of Thursday, 18 April. The incident happened around 8.46pm on Wickham Road, near the junction with Shirley Road.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed it is investigating a collision involving a vehicle chased by Metropolitan Police (MPS) officers that slammed into multiple vehicles. The driver of the pursued car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six Injured, One in Critical Condition

The crash also injured six other people. All were rushed to hospital, with one victim reported to have potentially life-threatening injuries.

IOPC Opens Early-Stage Inquiry

“We can confirm we have started an independent investigation into the circumstances of a fatal traffic incident in Croydon following a pursuit involving Metropolitan Police officers on 18 April. Our investigation is in its very early stages,” an IOPC spokesperson said.

“So far, we have gathered initial accounts from the officers involved and obtained body-worn video footage.”

The watchdog will examine police conduct, forensic evidence, vehicle data, and communications to see if officers followed protocol during the chase. Witness statements are also being collected.

Authorities Appeal for Witnesses

The area was sealed off and traffic diversions stayed in place overnight. Anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam footage from Wickham Road around the time is urged to contact the IOPC or Metropolitan Police immediately.

The deceased’s identity remains unconfirmed as next of kin are being informed.
