Isle of Wight Pride smashes expectations with 15,000-strong UKPride bash!

Just a year after hosting their first-ever Pride, Isle of Wight has gone from zero to hero with a massive UKPride celebration that left the Island buzzing. Over 15,000 supporters flooded the streets, with even more lining up to cheer on the vibrant parade.

Islanders Show United Pride

“Seeing the packed Union Street and hearing the cheers made me proud to be an Islander,” said Yve White, Isle of Wight Pride trustee. The warm, welcoming atmosphere wiped away any notion that the Island is stuck in the past.

A sharp contrast to last year’s controversy when Tory MP Andrew Turner quit after calling homosexuality “a danger to society,” this year’s Tory MP Bob Seely rocked rainbow gear and danced atop a Hovertravel hovercraft float. Talk about progress!

From Closet to Trustee

New trustee Ian revealed how last year’s Pride changed him: “I was still in the closet then. The love and support I felt gave me the courage to come out. Now, I’m proud to help run the event.”

Sky-High Spectacle and Defiant March

The day kicked off spectacularly with a Royal Navy parachute squad delivering a giant Rainbow Flag to the Pride Beach arena. The vivid and political parade marched through Ryde, led by lesbians and members of the Island’s trans community. This was a powerful stand against the transphobic protests seen at Pride in London earlier this year.

Isle of Wight Pride organisers condemned the hate and fully backed Pride in London’s stance. “Transphobia isn’t welcome here,” they declared.

Record-Breaking Flag and Star-Studded Line-up

The parade unveiled the UK’s largest-ever Pride flag — a staggering 150 metres long, smashing the previous 100-metre record, marking 40 years of the iconic rainbow banner symbolising the global fight for LGBT+ rights.

At Ryde Harbour beach, festival-goers enjoyed zones for kids, wellbeing, chilling out, and loads more. Charity stalls raised awareness on LGBT+ issues. The main stage roared with performances from Danny Beard, a Lady Gaga tribute, Dolly Parton tribute, and a show-stopping set by Conchita Wurst, EuroPride Vienna 2019’s ambassador.

The night finished with an energetic Livin Joy set and DJ tunes by Gok Wan as the sun dipped over Ryde Harbour, creating magical moments shared worldwide.

Island Pride Runs Deep

Matt Bundy from Isle of Wight Pride said, “We’re still recovering from Saturday! The photos, videos and messages show just how huge an impact this Pride has had on islanders and visitors alike.”

“We are truly PROUD of our Island community’s unwavering support for Pride,” he added.
