Isle of Wight School Kids Step Back Into WWII Evacuation Drama!
Schoolchildren on the Isle of Wight are about to live history firsthand with a special Second World War evacuation re-enactment at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Havenstreet, running from 18 to 21 June.
Step Into the Shoes of Wartime Evacuees
Organised by Isle of Wight Council’s Heritage Education Service, this immersive event recreates the tense moments thousands of British kids faced at the start of WWII. Pupils and teachers will don authentic wartime clothes and carry gas masks, preparing to board a steam train just like evacuees did decades ago.
“This is an interesting and thought provoking chance for our schoolchildren to gain a small insight into the war that they would not be able to obtain from their school books,” said Councillor John Hobart, Cabinet member for heritage.
Wartime Life Uncovered: Food, Rationing, and Air Raids
The day includes tasting ration-era grub like ‘eggless’ cake, making do-and-mend toys, and attending drills in a replica wartime classroom. Pupils may even face interruptions from air raid sirens, forcing them into improvised shelters — just like real evacuees.
“Experience days like this help future generations appreciate the sacrifices made for their freedom today,” added Councillor Hobart.
