M25 Shut After Tanker Hits Car in Serious Crash
A huge chunk of the M25 in Surrey has been shut down after a tanker collided with a car on Sunday evening. The smash left hundreds of drivers stuck in a nightmare traffic jam as lanes 1, 2, and 3 were closed clockwise between junctions 5 and 6.
Chaos as Tanker Collision Closes M25 Clockwise
Emergency crews from Surrey Fire and Rescue, paramedics, and police rushed to the scene following the crash. It’s believed there was a spillage from the tanker, but officials are yet to confirm what the tanker was carrying or the exact origins of the spill.
The closure is expected to last for hours while police investigate the cause of the collision. A spokeswoman from Surrey Fire and Rescue confirmed multiple fire crews attended but gave no more details.
Widespread Disruption Across Junction 5 and Beyond
Highways England announced a full closure of Junction 5 clockwise, also shutting ramps from the A21 near Sevenoaks and the M26 Junction 2a onto the M25.
“A full closure of Junction 5 on the M25 clockwise has been put in place. This will also include a closure from the A21 Sevenoaks and a closure from the M26 Junction 2a due to the seriousness of the incident,” said a Highways England spokesperson.
Hours-Long Standstill With Drivers Trapped
By just past midnight, Highways England was slowly managing to turn traffic around. However, frustrated drivers had taken matters into their own hands, using the hard shoulder to escape the jam.
Many motorists reported being trapped for over two and a half hours. By early morning, police crash investigators were still working on the scene, with Highways England officers conducting welfare checks on stranded drivers.
