Crash Shuts M27 for Over 24 Hours
The stretch between Junction 9 (Fareham) and Junction 5 (southampton/" title="Southampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton) was closed for a day and a half. The closure came after a three-vehicle collision on Wednesday that claimed the life of a lorry driver in his 30s.
Authorities had hoped to reopen the road Thursday evening but work to clear the wreckage and remove the gantry pushed the reopening to just after midnight.
National Highways Updates Traffic Situation
National Highways took to social media to keep drivers posted: “The overhead gantry has been removed, and the M27 westbound is now open between J9 Fareham and J5 Southampton following a serious collision yesterday.”
They added a lane was still closed briefly past the scene “for continued repairs to roadside technology.”
Later updates confirmed all lanes on the M27 were fully open between Junction 7 (Hedge End) and Junction 5 with traffic reported flowing well.
Tragic Crash Highlights Road Safety
The fatal incident is a stark reminder of the dangers on our roads. Emergency crews and highway workers acted with urgency to reopen this vital route safely and swiftly, easing congestion and helping drivers get back on their way.
