UK Travel Chaos as Thick Fog and Heavy Rain Batter the Nation

Travellers across the UK are bracing for major disruption as dense fog smothers large parts of the country, with up to six inches of heavy rain set to lash regions over the coming days.

Air Travel Grind to a Halt

Ryanair and other airlines are battling bad weather fallout, urging passengers to check their apps for flight updates. “Weather conditions are beyond our control,” Ryanair stressed, promising to keep customers informed.

Key airports like Gatwick and Manchester have slapped on temporary air traffic restrictions to keep skies safe. Nats, the UK’s air traffic control, said:

“Due to widespread fog, temporary restrictions are in place at several airports across the UK today. These measures are necessary to ensure safety. We continue to monitor the situation closely and are working with airlines and airports to minimize disruption.”

Manchester Airport reported some hold-ups, but assured travellers most delays were brief.

Met Office Warns of Torrential Rain and Flooding Threats

The Met Office has slapped a yellow weather warning on heavy rain from Monday December 30 to just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. The warning spells trouble with:

  • Flooding: Homes and businesses at risk of damage.
  • Travel Chaos: Train and bus delays or cancellations.
  • Road Dangers: Spray, flooding, and possible closures.
  • Cut-Off Areas: Flooded roads may isolate some communities.

The Met Office also emphasised a “danger to life” from fast-flowing or deep floodwater in the worst-hit zones.

Roads and Rails Hit Hard Ahead of New Year

With 3.8 million drivers expected on the roads as Christmas holidaymakers head home, the RAC warns to avoid major routes between 10am and 3pm when rush peaks. In south-east Wales, police have urged drivers to steer clear of routes between Kilgetty and Red Roses unless absolutely necessary.

On the rails, pricey engineering works are causing headaches at Liverpool Street, Paddington, St Pancras, plus signalling upgrades in Crewe and Cambridge — disrupting services across north-west and east England.

Weather Snapshot and Travel Tips

  • Today: Foggy conditions linger in England and Wales. Rain pounds parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
  • Tonight: Mist and fog will stick around with scattered rain in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
  • Tomorrow: Rain clears in the northwest, giving way to sunny spells and blustery showers, ahead of colder snaps and hill snow in the north.

Travellers are urged to stay glued to airline and Met Office updates, allow extra travel time, and prepare for delays.
