Scotland Police Pull Back ‘Goodwill’ Over Pay Row

Police Scotland delivered their sharpest move in over 100 years on Friday, pulling back all “goodwill” amid a stormy pay dispute. At 5pm, officers stopped working beyond their contracted hours and shelved unpaid duties after rejecting a flat £565 annual pay rise — which the Scottish Police Federation (SPF) branded “derisory.”

Strike Ban Means Tactical Protest

Police officers can’t legally strike, so this is their strongest form of protest. The SPF, representing 98% of Scotland’s police force, announced their members will refuse overtime, early shift starts, unpaid responsibilities, and charging personal equipment at home — all key extras officers usually provide for free.

“This is the most significant discontent in the police service since the 1970s,” said SPF General Secretary Calum Steele. “It’s the most overt demonstration of action by our members in more than a century.”

Impact Looms on Huge Open Championship Event

The timeline couldn’t be worse. The big “Project Servator” operation set for the Open Championship at St Andrews, expecting up to 29,000 fans, faces disruption. Police Inspector Andy Malcolm warned the action “will have a significant effect on delivery,” with officers no longer arriving early or covering extra hours without pay.

Pay Row Still Raging

  • The government offered an average 2% pay rise for most officers, just 1% for higher earners.
  • SPF demanded a 3.4% increase, calling the offer contemptuous.
  • Negotiations through the Police Negotiating Board (PNB) are still ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We recognise the significant goodwill officers bring daily and remain committed to reaching an agreement.”

UK-Wide Police Pay Grumbles Grow

Police forces across the UK are simmering. In Wiltshire, the Police Federation blasted the government for using police as an “easy target” with measly pay rises. The Police Federation of England and Wales revealed 14% of officers struggle to afford essentials monthly. Northern Ireland’s federation echoed support for Scotland cops, condemning their treatment during pay talks.

The cost-of-living crisis is squeezing frontline officers hard — and their patience is running out.
