Hurricane Beryl Batters Texas and Louisiana: At Least Eight Dead

Hurricane Beryl has wreaked havoc across south-east Texas and Louisiana, killing at least eight people and plunging nearly three million into darkness with widespread power cuts.

Storm Hits Hard, Chaos Across South

Beryl struck the southern US early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane but has since weakened into a tropical depression. Officials warned of savage winds, life-threatening storm surges, and up to 15 inches of rain flooding towns and cities.

More than 1,100 flights were grounded at Houston’s main airport, snarling travel plans amid the chaos. The storm lashed the region with winds reaching 75 mph and gusts hitting 87 mph in Houston alone.

Power Outages Leave Millions in the Dark

By Tuesday morning, around 2.3 million Texans were without power, with Louisiana and Arkansas also reporting outages. Utility giant CenterPoint Energy aims to restore power to at least one million homes and businesses by Wednesday night. Crews are racing against the clock amidst toppled trees and downed power lines.

Deadly Toll and Devastation Revealed

Hurricane Beryl has already claimed at least 10 lives in the Caribbean, with the US tally climbing to eight confirmed fatalities. The dead include:

  • Harris County, Texas:
    • A 53-year-old man died when a falling tree crushed his home causing the roof to collapse.
    • Grandmother Maria Loredo, 73, was killed after a tree smashed through her roof. Miraculously, her family escaped unharmed.
    • Houston police officer Russell Richardson drowned trying to navigate flooded roads.
    • One victim died in a lightning-triggered house fire.
  • Montgomery County, Texas:
    • A man was killed when a tree toppled onto him while driving a tractor.
    • Two homeless people died after a tree crushed their tent.
  • Benton, Louisiana:
    • A woman died when a tree crashed into her home.

Floods and Winds Pose Continuing Danger

Houston’s low-lying coastal landscape makes it especially flood-prone. Authorities warn heavy rain and flash floods will persist as Beryl drifts north-northeast, despite weakening. Residents must remain alert and prepared for worsening conditions.

Rescue and Recovery Underway

Emergency crews and utility workers are working round the clock to restore electricity and clear debris. Officials urge locals to stay informed through trusted news sources and strictly follow safety warnings. The clean-up will be long and fraught with danger.

Aftermath of a Deadly Storm

Storm Beryl has left a trail of tragedy and disruption across the southern US. With millions affected, the full scale of damage is still emerging as communities brace for a tough recovery ahead.
