Surrey’s Dan Johns Confirmed as Permanent Chief Fire Officer
Dan Johns has officially taken the reins as Surrey’s permanent Chief Fire Officer after 23 years climbing the ranks. He’s been acting in the role since June 2022, having previously served as Deputy Chief Fire Officer since 2019.
From Firefighter to Fire Chief
Dan joined Surrey Fire and Rescue Service back in 1999 as a firefighter at Leatherhead Fire Station. After passing a tough interview, he steps up now to lead the county’s fire service full-time. He’s also the Vice-Chair of the UK Rescue Organisation, pushing national standards in professional rescue skills.
Dan Pledges to Boost Surrey Fire Service
Speaking on his appointment, Dan said:
“I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed as Surrey’s permanent Chief Fire Officer. I’m looking forward to building on the plans I put in place as Acting Chief over the last few months. Having served here my entire career, I know our strengths and where we can improve. I’m dedicated to making Surrey one of the best fire and rescue services in the industry, and I know we have the people to make it happen.”
Council Cheers New Leadership
Council leader Tim Oliver welcomed the appointment, saying:
“After a strong interim spell, Dan was the clear choice for the role. He’s knowledgeable, experienced, and approachable, and I’m confident he’ll lead Surrey Fire and Rescue Service on its path to excellence.”
Meanwhile, Cabinet Member Denise Turner-Stewart added:
“Having worked with Dan closely, I’m thrilled he’s now Chief Fire Officer. With over 20 years of experience serving Surrey’s residents, he brings great confidence that our fire service and community safety are in safe hands.”
