Fatal Crash Shuts Major Sittingbourne Road

A deadly collision near Sittingbourne in the early hours has forced the closure of a key road linking the M2 to the town. The A249 by the Keycol Hill roundabout remains shut both ways as emergency services deal with the tragic incident.

Man Dies After Collision on A249

Just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, kent-police/" title="Kent Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="2396">Kent Police were called to the scene following reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle near the A249 dual carriageway. Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after.

The circumstances surrounding the death are being treated as unexplained but not suspicious. The coroner has been informed and the victim’s family has been notified. Officers are providing support to the grieving relatives.

Road Closure to Continue Amid Investigation

The A249 remains closed between the A2 (Key Street) and B2006 as specialist collision investigators comb the scene. Police have established a cordon and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

Kent Police have also summoned their drone unit to gather aerial images to aid the ongoing probe.

Highways England Updates on Traffic

A Highways England spokesman confirmed:

“The A249 near Sittingbourne is closed in both directions due to a police-led incident. Kent Police are managing the scene, with National Highways officers assisting in traffic control. It’s unclear when the road will reopen, but closures are expected to last throughout the morning.”

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes while investigations continue.
