RAF Scampton Housing Plan Sparks Fury in Lincolnshire
The Home Office’s controversial decision to convert the former RAF Scampton base into asylum seeker accommodation has sparked a fierce backlash from West Lindsey District Council.
£300 Million Regeneration Project on the Line
The council warns that the move threatens a massive £300 million regeneration scheme. Plans for the site include a museum, entertainment venues, new homes, preservation of historic buildings, and keeping the runway intact.
Shockingly, the regeneration plan was unveiled just days before the Home Office revealed its asylum housing scheme.
Council Slams Home Office Over ‘Irrational’ Move
Despite Home Office promises to protect RAF Scampton’s heritage, the council calls their housing plan “irrational” and accuses them of ignoring proper planning permission.
West Lindsey is now taking legal action to stop the asylum housing plan and save the regeneration project.
“Adopting a site-specific policy for RAF Scampton, based on sound evidence and shaped by our community, has been an aspiration of the council since the closure of the base was announced,” said Sally Grindrod-Smith, the council’s director of planning, regeneration and communities.
“This is a landmark moment—any future proposals for the site must now follow due process and conform with this policy.
“This work shows the council’s commitment to carefully planned regeneration. It’s clear the Home Office didn’t consider key planning issues or follow statutory processes.”
