UK Considers Sending Troops to Ukraine in Major Shift
The UK is weighing up sending troops to Ukraine for the first time since the war kicked off, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has revealed. This could be a game changer in Britain’s support for Ukraine, signalling a major escalation in the conflict.
Shapps Eyes Training Move Into Ukraine
Shapps is exploring relocating the British-led training programme directly into Ukraine. So far, training has taken place on UK soil, with bases like Salisbury Plain helping train over 20,000 Ukrainian soldiers under Operation Interflex since 2022.
In his first newspaper interview as Defence Secretary with The Sunday Telegraph, Shapps disclosed the details, stressing the vital role Britain has played in equipping Ukraine’s forces with new battle skills.
Navy Role and Kyiv Talks
The shift follows Shapps’ recent trip to Kyiv where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. They discussed a tougher UK naval presence to protect commercial ships from Russian attacks in the Black Sea. This would push Britain deeper into the frontline against Vladimir Putin’s aggression.
Bold New Strategy Amid Rising Risks
Until now, NATO countries, including the UK, have avoided training troops inside Ukraine to prevent entanglement in direct combat. But this new move shows a firm British resolve to bolster Ukraine’s defence on its own soil.
The details of how and when troops might deploy remain unclear. But one thing is certain — the UK is ready to take more decisive action to back Ukraine against Russia’s relentless assault.
