West Sussex Fire Brigade Warns: Stay Safe This Freezing Winter!
As temperatures plunge and heating bills soar, West Sussex firefighters are urging residents to be extra cautious with alternative home heating methods. Open fires, electric blankets, portable heaters, and wheat bags might keep you warm, but they could also spark deadly fires.
Seven Fires in a Week Raise Alarm Bells
Last week alone, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service tackled seven house fires across the county. One blaze in Worthing was sparked by an electric heater placed too close to flammable materials. Luckily, the heater’s power cut out early, allowing the fire to die down — but it could have been far worse.
Earlier this month, Midhurst residents had a narrow escape when a chimney fire smouldering inside a wall cavity was detected by a smoke alarm. The alert gave them time to act before disaster struck.
Fire Chief Sounds the Alarm on Heating Hazards
“With temperatures dropping below freezing, fire risks in homes have shot up,” said Chris Bowles, Station Manager at Worthing Fire Station. “We don’t want to stop anyone from staying warm during these cold months, but it’s crucial people understand the dangers and how to avoid fires.
“Use our online home fire safety check tool to identify risks and learn how to reduce them,” he added. “Make sure smoke alarms are installed and working on every level to give you the best chance to escape quickly if a fire starts.”
