A soggy Friday is on the cards for much of the UK, with severe weather warnings sweeping across the nation. Buckets of rain will lash northeastwards, hitting central and southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland the hardest. Expect 20-30mm of rainfall across these areas, with some parts of Scotland drenched by over 60mm and Northern Ireland seeing up to 40mm.
Amber Alert: Heavy Rain to Hammer Southwest Scotland
An amber warning for torrential rain is already in place for southwest Scotland this Friday morning. Rainfall could pile up to 50mm widely, and in some upland spots, it might soar beyond 70mm. Meanwhile, northern Scotland’s high ground could see this rain turning to snow, with up to 10cm falling over the Grampians and northern areas above 200 meters.
To add to the chaos, strong winds will batter coastal Northern Ireland and western Scotland, whipping gusts up to 60mph. This tempestuous weather is driven by a fierce jet stream — the UK’s weather puppet master.
Why the Wild Weather? Jet Stream Supercharged by Atlantic Chill
While the icy blast freezing North America won’t directly hit the UK, it’s ramping up the jet stream over the Atlantic. This powerful current is pushing a slew of low-pressure systems towards the UK, promising more wet and wild weather for days ahead.
New Year Weekend: No Let-Up in Sight
The soggy and windy spell will roll on into the New Year weekend. Saturday looks set to deliver the heaviest, most persistent rain. Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Helen Caughey warned:
“It’ll be an unsettled New Year weekend for much of the UK, with frequent and at times heavy rain, and a chance this could turn to snow mainly across high ground in Scotland, although there remains a lot of uncertainty where the boundary between the milder and colder air will be.
New Year’s Eve will be the wetter of the two days, with fronts bringing rain to many areas, especially parts of Scotland as well as south and south-west England, where very strong winds along the English Channel are expected.
New Year’s Day will see further showers and some longer spells of rain in central and southern UK, while northern areas will face a mix of sunshine and showers before calmer weather sets in on Monday.”
Stay tuned for possible new weather warnings as forecasts sharpen in the coming days. Keep your wellies handy!
Looking Ahead: A Weather Divide Next Week
Next week could see a split in the UK’s weather, with high pressure clinging to the southeast, offering calmer skies, while unsettled low pressure dominates the northwest. The north may dodge sunshine for showers, rain spells, and strong winds, though exact details remain hazy. Meteorologists expect clearer updates shortly.
