Oscar Shock: Will Smith Quits Academy After Slap Scandal
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences went into crisis mode last Friday, holding an emergency virtual meeting to discuss disciplinary action against Will Smith. The actor has now resigned from the prestigious film body following the infamous Oscars slap.
What Happened: Smith Hits Rock Live on Stage
Will Smith made headlines worldwide when he slapped comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars ceremony. The shocking moment came after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife’s shaved head — a look caused by her battle with alopecia. Less than an hour later, Smith won Best Actor for his role in King Richard, where he played the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.
Academy Slams Smith’s “Unacceptable and Harmful” Behaviour
In a strong statement, the Academy said the night was “overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour we saw Mr Smith exhibit on stage.” Smith apologised publicly and admitted he had “betrayed the trust of the Academy” and was “heartbroken” at his actions. He vowed to “fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct.” His resignation means he loses voting rights for future Oscars.
Smith’s Resignation Fast-Tracks Disciplinary Review
The Academy had originally scheduled a disciplinary hearing for April 18 but fast-tracked it after Smith quit. Few stars have resigned or been expelled from the Academy. Past expulsions include Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and Roman Polanski over sexual misconduct allegations, and Carmine Caridi for pirating screener videos.
Disciplinary options on the table for Smith ranged from banning him from future Oscars to revoking his award. However, only one Oscar has ever been revoked — a 1969 documentary, Young Americans, was found ineligible after winning.
Hollywood Clamps Down: Studios Hit Pause on Smith Projects
Whoopi Goldberg, an Academy board member, predicted “big consequences” but ruled out stripping Smith of his Oscar. Meanwhile, major studios like Sony and Netflix have paused their work with the actor. Chris Rock, who launched a stand-up tour shortly after the incident, has yet to comment publicly. He told fans he is “still kind of processing what happened” and will address the slap “at some point.”
