Biden Jets to Israel Amid Rising Gaza Tensions
US President Joe Biden is set to touch down in Israel this Wednesday, October 18. The announcement came from Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the early hours of Tuesday, October 17. This high-stakes visit lands as the Gaza Strip’s humanitarian crisis spins out of control, with Israel weighing a possible ground assault.
Biden to Back Israel’s Right to Defend
Blinken stressed the visit’s importance, saying it will underline the US’s unwavering support for Israel at a critical regional flashpoint. “President Biden will make it clear that Israel has the right and duty to defend its people against Hamas and other terrorist threats,” said Blinken. The Secretary of State has been busy talking to Middle East leaders all past week ahead of the trip.
Military Muscle and Hostage Rescue on the Table
Just days before, Biden ordered two aircraft carrier groups and extra military assets to the region, sending a “crystal clear” warning to anyone eyeing an attack on Israel. Blinken revealed Biden’s mission is as much strategic as diplomatic — including plans to work with Israel on freeing hostages held by Hamas.
The US and Israel are also teaming up to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilians. This effort might create safe zones to shield non-combatants from harm, as warned by UN aid chief Martin Griffiths amid the worsening crisis.
Billions in US Aid Pledged
Further showing muscle, the US has pledged military aid and shipments to Israel. Officials are preparing to request over $2 billion from Congress in additional support for Israel and related efforts.
