Prime Minister Gears Up to Host Biden in Belfast for Belfast Agreement Anniversary
Biden and UK PM to Celebrate Belfast Agreement Milestone
The Prime Minister is set to welcome President Joe Biden to Belfast this week. The visit marks the anniversary of the historic Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement. Across several events, the leaders will commemorate 25 years since the landmark peace deal that transformed Northern Ireland’s future.
US Investment Booms in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland’s economy is booming with strong US ties. Around 1,000 American-owned businesses operate there, including giants like Microsoft. Last year, Northern Ireland exported goods worth over £1 billion to the US.
Recently, economic links have strengthened further. Semiconductor firm Wolfspeed, based in North Carolina, announced a major R&D partnership with Queen’s University Belfast. This follows the UK signing a state-level trade deal with North Carolina last July.
PM to Launch Northern Ireland Investment Summit
The Prime Minister aims to boost investment even more by announcing a Northern Ireland Investment Summit. Scheduled for 12-13 September 2023 in Belfast, the summit is led by the Department for Business and Trade alongside the Northern Ireland Office and Invest Northern Ireland.
It’s all part of a bigger plan to drive economic growth and prosperity for Northern Ireland as it looks to the next 25 years.
PM’s Vision: A Thriving Northern Ireland
“Northern Ireland – like the rest of the UK – is teeming with opportunities, talent and ingenuity. The biggest thing we can do to improve people’s standard of living and secure a prosperous and thriving Northern Ireland is economic growth. That’s something I’m relentlessly focused on delivering,” the Prime Minister said.
He added, “It is that promise of a better future that we offered to everyone in Northern Ireland that I will be thinking of first and foremost over the coming days. It is my responsibility as the Prime Minister to ensure we are making good on that promise.”
