Biden Touches Down in Israel Amid Rising Tension
US President Joe Biden landed in Israel on Wednesday for a high-stakes show of solidarity after the recent Hamas attacks. But his visit was cast into shadow by a deadly blast at a Gaza hospital, escalating tensions even further.
Netanyahu Greets Biden with Warm Embrace
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rolled out the red carpet, personally welcoming Biden on the tarmac. The two leaders shared a firm handshake and a brief chat, signalling a strengthened bond amid crisis.
Security around the visit was tighter than ever, with hundreds of armed police and troops securing the seafront hotel where Biden is staying. Snipers were stationed on nearby rooftops, underscoring the fraught atmosphere.
EU’s Von der Leyen Condemns Gaza Hospital Blast
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke out strongly at the European Parliament, calling the explosion at Gaza’s Al Ahli hospital a “senseless tragedy.” She urged a full investigation to uncover the facts and hold the guilty accountable, without jumping to blame.
Von der Leyen’s recent trip to Israel drew criticism for not stressing Israel’s duty to follow humanitarian law. During her speech, she reaffirmed Europe’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence under international law. She also highlighted the EU’s role as the largest donor to Palestinians and vowed this aid would continue.
