Fake Ozempic Pens Flood UK and EU Markets
Authorities have sounded the alarm over counterfeit Ozempic injection pens hitting shelves in the UK and EU. These fake pens mimic the popular diabetes drug Ozempic, which has skyrocketed in demand due to its off-label use for weight loss.
Counterfeit Crisis Originates in Austria and Germany
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) unveiled that bogus pre-filled Ozempic pens, labelled in German, are circulating from wholesalers based in Austria and Germany. France’s ANSM has urged the entire supply chain to stay alert for any suspicious batches.
So far, there are no confirmed reports of patient harm from counterfeit pens sold through legal pharmacies. But the German drug watchdog BfArM is on high alert, releasing side-by-side images revealing telltale signs like inactive serial numbers to help spot fakes.
Ozempic and Wegovy: Novo Nordisk’s Blockbuster Duo
Ozempic’s active ingredient, semaglutide, is also sold as Wegovy for weight loss — both made by Danish pharma giant Novo Nordisk. The soaring popularity of these drugs has boosted the company’s profits, but also sparked a surge in dangerous fakes.
Experts Warn on GLP-1 Agonists’ Risks
Researchers have recently flagged serious concerns about GLP-1 agonists—a drug class that includes Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Saxenda. These medicines carry risks of severe gut issues, including stomach paralysis, if not properly managed.
“It’s crucial these drugs are only used under strict medical supervision,” warned researchers.
With counterfeit Ozempic pens circulating and health risks rising, patients and pharmacists alike must stay vigilant.
