UK High Commission Goes Big on Ambassadors for a Day in Ghana

The British High Commission in Ghana is back with its popular “Ambassador for a Day” contest for the second year running. This initiative aims to fast-track progress on gender equality in leadership, a goal still a whopping 130 years away globally, according to UN Women.

Powerful Partnerships and Promising Talent

In collaboration with CAMFED, Plan International Ghana, and the United Nations Population Fund, the UK launched the competition this February. Winners get a priceless opportunity: a full day shadowing a real Ambassador plus ongoing mentoring from their hosts.

This year, British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson joined forces with the Norwegian, French, and Swiss Ambassadors to sift through hundreds of applications, finally selecting four standout winners.

Harriet Thompson said: “Our competition isn’t only about our amazing winners, it’s about every woman who applied and our incredible partners. It’s about creating space for equality so men and women stand shoulder-to-shoulder worldwide. This year, we celebrate as the UK launches its new International Women and Girls Strategy, embracing equity globally.”

Championing Equality This March

The contest is a highlight of the British High Commission’s ‘Africa Gender and Equalities Month.’ Throughout March, the Mission hosts roundtables, seminars, and talks spotlighting gender issues and equality across Ghana.

Norwegian Ambassador Ingrid Mollestad said: “We believe this programme will help bridge the gender gap and empower women in Ghana. I’m thrilled to spend the day with one of these inspiring winners – congratulations to them all.”

The Winners Step Into the Spotlight

On Friday, 17th March, four lucky winners – Wilhelmina Larweh, Yahaya Tipagya, Umar Wasila, and Martha Allotey – joined the Ambassadors and partners at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in Accra to celebrate their achievement.

Yahaya Tipagya, a winner, said: “As Ambassador for a Day, I’m keen to learn from seasoned diplomats, thrive in a fast-paced environment and develop skills that will boost my education and career.”

Umar Wasila added: “I’m eager to understand the Ambassador’s role and daily duties at the High Commission during my shadowing experience.”

The competition continues to inspire a new generation, championing equality one Ambassador at a time.
