Disaster has hit off Italy’s southern coast with two separate migrant shipwrecks claiming at least 11 lives. Dozens more remain missing in desperate rescue efforts.
Lampedusa Rescue Ends in Horror
Near the island of Lampedusa, the German aid ship RESQSHIP stumbled upon a wooden boat on the verge of sinking. They managed to save 51 people, but tragedy struck. Rescuers found ten bodies trapped in the flooded lower deck. Two unconscious passengers were cut free with an axe in a frantic bid to save them.
Flaming Yacht Capsizes Near Calabria
About 125 miles east of Calabria, a yacht set ablaze and capsized after leaving Turkey, leaving one woman dead after falling overboard. The Italian coastguard rescued at least 12 migrants from Iran, Iraq, and Syria survivors of the fiery wreck.
Search Continues for Missing Migrants
The fate of more than 50 people from the Calabria vessel remains unknown. Search and rescue teams are battling against time amid growing international concern as the desperate situation unfolds.
“The seas have claimed too many lives already,” a rescue official said. “We will keep searching until every missing person is found.”
