Britain Cheers One Year of Homes for Ukraine Scheme

The UK government has praised the British public’s generosity one year after welcoming the first arrivals under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

In a video message on 25 March, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK thanked the thousands of families opening their doors. The scheme is one of the fastest and largest visa programmes in British history.

Thousands Welcomed, More Needed

Since launch, 117,700 Ukrainians have been invited into family homes nationwide. With the conflict ongoing, many Ukrainians need re-matching, and sponsors are urged to step forward.

New government data reveals over 28,300 Ukrainians of working age found paid jobs within six months of arrival, showing their commitment to rebuilding lives in the UK.

Support Boost and Wembley Welcome

To help Ukrainians settle, the government has allocated £150 million to councils. This covers housing support, extended and increased thank-you payments for sponsors, and other vital services.

Fans can look forward to this weekend’s England v Ukraine EURO 24 qualifier at Wembley, where 1,000 free tickets are offered to Ukrainians and their sponsors.

Voices from the Frontline

Michael Gove, Levelling Up Secretary: “One year on from the first person arriving under Homes for Ukraine, I’m proud of Britain’s generosity and belief in freedom. Ukrainians have embraced life here—sending children to school, joining the workforce, and learning English. Their bravery and resilience enrich our communities.”

Vadym Prystaiko, Ukrainian Ambassador: “I am humbled by the UK’s generosity. Over 160,000 Ukrainian women and children have been welcomed into communities and schools. But the war continues and more support is needed. I urge those who can help to come forward.”

John from Richmond, Homes for Ukraine Sponsor: “Hosting two people escaping war has been a big commitment but a true gift. I encourage anyone considering hosting to take the plunge. It changes lives.”

What’s Next for Hosts and Communities?

The government recently contacted potential hosts to assist with re-matching families. Hosts helping Ukrainians for over 12 months will receive increased thank-you payments.

Local authority housing funds are in place to support independent accommodation for Ukrainians and Afghans. The aim is to build affordable housing for these communities long term.

Ukrainians arriving under the scheme have the right to work in the UK for up to three years and access benefits on par with UK nationals.
