UN Peacekeepers Targeted in Shocking Israeli Tank Incursion
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has slammed recent attacks on its peacekeepers after Israeli tanks stormed a UN base in southern Lebanon. The dramatic stand-off highlights rising tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border.
Israeli Tanks Force UN Base to Shut Down
On Sunday, two Israeli tanks forcibly entered a UNIFIL position in Ramyah, southern Lebanon. The soldiers demanded the peacekeepers turn out their lights while the troops huddled in shelters inside the base.
After around 45 minutes and protests from UN officials warning about the risks to their staff, the tanks eventually withdrew. But the calm was short-lived.
Smoke Shells Hit Peacekeepers – 15 Suffer Reaction
Just two hours later, gunfire and smoke shells exploded near the base, triggering skin irritation and gastrointestinal issues in 15 UN soldiers. UNIFIL did not confirm who fired the rounds but warned against any deliberate attacks.
Rocket Barrage and Rising Regional Tensions
- The same day, Hezbollah launched roughly 115 rockets from Lebanon into Israel, escalating the conflict.
- The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vowed to protect Israeli citizens against what they called “Hezbollah terrorist” threats.
Deployed since 1978, UNIFIL’s mission is to keep peace along the volatile “blue line” dividing Lebanon and Israel, as well as monitoring the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
This latest confrontation shines a harsh light on how precarious peace remains. It also raises serious alarms about the security of UN peacekeepers and respect for international missions in this conflict hot zone.
UNIFIL’s stern warning: “Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers will not be tolerated and threaten the fragile stability of the region.”
