Zelenskyy Snubs Macron’s Olympic Ceasefire Pitch
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has flat-out rejected French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for a temporary ceasefire during the Paris Olympics. Zelenskyy fears the truce would give Russia a dangerous advantage and put Ukraine’s security at risk.
Ancient Tradition Falls Flat Today
The idea of an Olympic ceasefire dates back to ancient Greece, when warring city-states paused conflicts to honour the Games. But Zelenskyy isn’t buying it.
“Let’s be honest, Emmanuel,” Zelenskyy said, “Who can guarantee that Russia won’t exploit this opportunity to shift its forces onto our territory?”
Zelenskyy: No Ceasefire That Helps Russia
He made one thing crystal clear — any truce that plays into Russia’s hands is off the table. Ukraine will stand firm against any such proposals.
Putin Mocked Olympics, Rejected the Truce
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed the suggestion during a China visit. He claimed the Olympics themselves break the spirit of the Games by forcing Russian athletes to compete as neutrals.
“If you demand something from someone, you must adhere to the rules yourself,” Putin said, throwing shade at the whole ceasefire idea.
