Spitfire’s 80th Birthday: Legendary Plane Takes to the Skies to Inspire Young British Aviators

On March 5th, 2016, the iconic Spitfire celebrates 80 years since its maiden flight. The legendary aircraft first soared above Southampton Airport in 1936, and the airport is marking the milestone with a special event that honours the past and fuels future British aviation dreams.

Spitfire Flying High Over the South Coast

To celebrate, a Spitfire will perform a breathtaking flight from Southampton Airport, soaring over the South Coast to thrill locals and visitors alike. The route is steeped in history, passing landmarks including the final resting place of the plane’s Chief Designer, R.J. Mitchell, the site of the old Supermarine factory in Woolston where thousands of Spitfires were built, and scenic spots like the River Itchen and Portsmouth Harbour.

Next-Gen Aviators Join the Celebration

The event will feature a remarkable line-up of British flying talent, from 28-year-old veteran Nathan Forster—believed to be the world’s youngest Spitfire pilot—to the RAF Air Cadets marking their 75th anniversary. Cadets from the local 2428 (Hedge End) Air Cadet Squadron will perform a Guard of Honour as the Spitfire rolls out of the hangar.

One lucky cadet will even get the chance to fly in a helicopter alongside the Spitfire. Plus, all cadets will have exclusive access to meet pilots Nathan Forster and Matt Jones, who will share their Spitfire flying experiences.

Southampton Airport Boss Pays Tribute

“Who would have thought that 80 years after the maiden flight from Southampton Airport of Spitfire K5054, this famous aircraft would still be inspiring new businesses and young people,” said Dave Lees, Managing Director of Southampton Airport. “I am sure that R.J. Mitchell, the Chief Designer, would be very proud that the Spitfire continues to enthrall people today.”

When and Where to Watch

The spectacular flight is scheduled between 11:00 and 12:00 on Saturday, March 5th, weather permitting. Best viewing spots include River Itchen, Weston Shore, Hythe, Royal Victoria Country Park, Lee on Solent, and Cowes.

Note: Southampton Airport will operate as usual with no public viewing area available.
