Scam Alert: 92-Year-Old Fleeced in Sainsbury’s Car Park Con
A crafty conman duped a 92-year-old pensioner out of £70 in a chilling scam at a Sainsbury’s in Farlington.
Wise Words from Police After Shocking Scam
On Tuesday, February 16, between 11:30am and noon, the elderly victim was sat in his car in the supermarket car park when a younger man approached him claiming he needed cash for diesel. The victim was persuaded to leave his vehicle and ride in the scammer’s car.
The fraudster then pinched cash from the man’s wallet before driving him to an ATM nearby, where the victim unwittingly withdrew more money. In total, the conman walked off with £70.
The Fake Diesel Buyer’s Description
- White male, around 5ft 8ins
- Round face, short hair
- Smartly dressed and clean shaven
- Spoke with a Spanish accent
He handed the victim six boxes of watches, falsely claiming they were worth more than the cash he took.
Police Urge Vigilance – Don’t Get Hooked
PC Hayley McMillan warned: “Anyone who saw this man and the victim in a dark saloon car around this time is asked to contact us immediately. Don’t hand over money to strangers claiming they need urgent cash, or get into their cars to withdraw money from a cash machine.”
“If someone insists on giving you a lift or asking for money, refuse. Head straight to the nearest shop and ask for help or phone the police.”
