Portsmouth Cracks Down on Child Abuse – Everyone Must Play Their Part!
Portsmouth is joining forces with the Department of Education’s national campaign to smash child abuse. It’s not just professionals—teachers, social workers, health staff, and the police—who’ve got a part to play. The public must get involved too.
Spot the Warning Signs of Child Abuse
Know what to look for to protect vulnerable children. Abuse or neglect often show in:
- Appearance: Frequent unexplained injuries, poor hygiene, matted hair, unexplained gifts, or parents turning up drunk to collect kids from school.
- Behaviour: Aggression, constant tiredness, drug or alcohol misuse, avoidance of family, regular lateness or absence from school.
- Communication: Sexual or aggressive language, self-harm, secretiveness, or being overly obedient.
Don’t Stay Silent – Speak Up, Even If You’re Unsure
Worried a child’s at risk? You don’t need proof—just trust your instincts. Speak to someone you trust, like a friend or family member, or go straight to Portsmouth’s MASH team (Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub). They’ll investigate and help if needed.
Back in 2014/15, more than 400,000 children in England got help because someone noticed they needed it. Don’t let fear stop you from reporting. Reporting a concern doesn’t mean a child will be taken away—it means agencies can step in to support the child and family.
MASH: Your Go-To for Reporting Concerns
MASH will ask for your details, but you can choose to stay anonymous if you want. Remember, reporting protects children and supports families—it’s a crucial step in keeping kids safe.
Cllr Neill Young, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We all have a role in protecting children. Nobody reports concerns lightly. Sometimes no further action is needed, but when it is, early intervention can change lives. If it’s serious, the courts get involved. We urge everyone to know the signs and how to act.”
