Passengers on a double-decker bus had a lucky escape this afternoon after the driver smashed into the Chapel Hill Railway Bridge – ripping the entire roof off the top deck.
The shocking crash happened in Basingstoke, where the Stagecoach bus collided with the low bridge, tearing the roof clean off.
Bus Roof Shredded in Bridge Smash
A Stagecoach spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying: “We can confirm that a Stagecoach bus was involved in an incident shortly before 2pm this afternoon on Chapel Hill, near Basingstoke railway station.”
Only two passengers and the driver were on board at the time.
No Injuries Despite Shocking Crash
Remarkably, nobody was hurt.
“Safety is our absolute priority and we are assisting police with their inquiries as well as carrying out our own investigation into the incident,” the spokesperson added.
Police rushed to the scene just before 2pm Wednesday afternoon to investigate.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the crash remains under review as police and Stagecoach look into how the bus could fit under the bridge – with catastrophic results.
