Massive Explosion Cuts Power to Hundreds in Leigh Park, Havant

Hundreds of homes and businesses in Leigh Park, Havant, have been plunged into darkness after a major power cable exploded this morning. Emergency crews rushed to Park Parade following the blast at the rear of a row of shops.

Power Cut Hits Park Parade

The electricity cut affected parts of Park Parade from around 8:45am. The explosion occurred near the Iceland store at about 10:30am, when an electrician was replacing a fuse at a nearby substation.

Blast Sends Manhole Cover Flying

The blast was so powerful it hurled a cast-iron manhole cover into the air. Scottish and Southern Electric workers were immediately called in to tackle the crisis at a main join box.

Live Cable Repairs to Take Hours

Technicians are now working on a live cable, digging down to expose and relocate it safely. The repair is complex and expected to keep power off for several hours before supply is restored.
