Firefighters Race to Blaze in Birmingham Tower Block – Suspected Arson on 22nd Floor
Fire crews rushed to a suspected arson fire in the lobby of a Birmingham tower block’s 22nd floor last night. The blaze broke out in the communal lobby area of Cleveland Tower, a 32-storey building in Holloway Head.
Quick Response Limits Damage
West Midlands Fire Service deployed four fire engines and around 20 firefighters from Ladywood, Bournbrook, and Highgate stations. The first crew arrived within 4 minutes and 28 seconds, launching an immediate attack on the fire.
Area Commander Ben Brook said: “About 750 people live in the tower, but thankfully no one was injured.” Although 30 to 40 residents evacuated, they left from areas unaffected by fire or smoke.
Building Design Holds Firm
Following last month’s Grenfell tragedy, the incident sent shockwaves through the community. However, thanks to the building’s compartmentalised design, damage was restricted to the lobby. Smoke affected floors 15 to the top.
Brook added: “The building performed as designed, containing the fire effectively.”
Safety Checks and Fire Precautions
Firefighters are conducting Safe and Well checks on residents and working closely with West Midlands Police and housing authorities.
Area Commander Brook urged: “High-rise residents must know their building’s evacuation plans and keep communal spaces clutter-free. While tower block fires are rare, everyone needs smoke alarms and should test them weekly. Have a fire plan ready – it could save lives.”
This blaze is a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in high-rises nationwide – stay alert, stay safe.
