Couple Jailed for Exploiting Grenfell Tower Tragedy in £125k Fraud

A man and woman have been locked up after ripping off fraud relief meant for Grenfell Tower victims. Elaine Douglas, 51, and Tommy Brooks, 52, both with no fixed address, pleaded guilty at Isleworth Crown Court on 30 May to fraud by false representation and deceiving UK immigration authorities.

Fake Residents Cash In on Grenfell Disaster

Douglas and Brooks falsely claimed they lived on the 19th floor of Grenfell Tower and were staying with friends on the night of the deadly fire on 14 June 2017. They swindled hotel accommodation and cash payouts worth over £125,000 between them—£67,125.35 for Douglas and £58,396.89 for Brooks.

Police investigation proved their story was a complete lie. They never lived in Grenfell Tower. Both were arrested on 1 May and charged the next day.

Judge Calls Fraud ‘Parasitic’ Exploitation of Human Tragedy

On 13 July, Douglas was jailed for three years, and Brooks received three years and three months behind bars. Each was also given concurrent nine-month sentences for trying to gain UK residency through deception.

“This was a parasitic fraud in the wake of a human catastrophe,” the sentencing judge slammed.

Detective Superintendent Matt Bonner, lead investigator for Operation Northleigh, condemned their actions:

“I have previously described the actions of those who exploited the tragedy for their own personal gain as truly appalling. They risk misrepresenting the Grenfell community, who continue to grieve.”

He added, “My thoughts remain with the genuine victims who should remain at the heart of all we do.”
