A 20-year-old man has been locked up for 30 months after snatching an elderly lady’s handbag in busy Fareham.
Grab and Go
The 86-year-old victim had her handbag stolen from her arm on West Street at 4:40pm on Sunday, 9 December 2018. Inside was her bank card, which the thief wasted no time in using.
Fast Food Fraud
The stolen card was used to splurge £5.54 at McDonald’s and rack up another £36.46 at McColls. Luckily, the grandmother was not physically hurt during the ordeal.
Convicted and Sentenced
Sergio Santos, from Williams Close, was charged with robbery and two counts of fraud. He admitted guilt at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday, 18 January. Today, Friday 15 February, he was sentenced to 30 months in a young offenders institution.
Police Praise
“This was a crime involving a vulnerable 86 year-old woman, who could not defend herself,” said DC Daryl Hillier. “I hope that today’s sentence provides some closure to the victim on this traumatic experience.
“I’d like to thank the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Fareham for their work, especially PCSO Ann Adams, whose efforts were key to securing this conviction.”
